Orange Swift

It was a bit breezy and rainy first thing for ringing at the Obs so spent the morning doing census instead. I could hear a Whimbrel calling away from the beach. On the Broadwater there was 1 Curlew, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 25 Redshank, 7 Dunlin, 41 Lapwing and 2 Avocet. Two Great Spotted Woodpecker came across the grazing marsh noisily calling before flying into the pines. The roving Tit flock was about back and forth around the pines/scrub and I finally managed to get a good count of the Long-tailed Tit when they flew from one tree across to the next with 28 altogether! There was a noticeable increase in Blackcap around the Obs with at least 5 individuals. There was a light passage of Swallow which picked up right before the storm closed in with 32 recorded.

Bee managed to do some ringing at Walsey today which tends to be much more sheltered in a south westerly, with 11 new birds and 7 retraps processed including 1 Coal Tit, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Robin, 2 Blue Tit, 1 Linnet, 1 Goldfinch, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Dunnock, 1 Great Tit and 1 Blackbird.

Sorry no complete moth list today! This internet wasn’t working this afternoon (due to the storm possibly?) so I had to do the blog at home and forgot to take a photo of the list! The species/numbers were very similar to recent days with numbers dominated by Flounced Rustic and much fewer Beet Moth. The highlights were a White-line Dart and a pristine Orange Swift!

There was a Painted Lady on the Obs path.
