Painted Lady

There was a pretty breezy south westerly today but it was a lovely warm summers day. First thing there was a large mixed flock of Black-headed Gull and Med Gull hawking over the Obs catching insects. The highlight of the day was a Quail, which was heard from the coastal public footpath in the afternoon near the entrance gate on the track! Such a great bird to have in the recording area.

Whitethroat around the Obs

The moth traps were a bit disappointing considering the warm temperatures (probably affected by the windy conditions) with 2 Small Emerald, 2 Meadow Grass-moth, 2 Large Masoner, 1 Bordered White, 12 Garden Grass-moth, 2 Uncertain/Rustic agg., 1 Bryotropha terrella, 1 Smoky Wainscot, 1 Common Swift, 1 Brown House Moth, 3 Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Dark Arches, 1 Sand Dart, 1 Mottled Rustic, 1 Ringed China Mark and 1 S. gigantella.

There were Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Small Heath and Red Admiral on the wing and many enjoying the Privet which is in full flower, but there was an absence of dragonflies and damselflies today perhaps due to the strong wind!
