Pied Flycatcher – Shannon Clifford

Although there was a strong northerly (it was freezing and felt like winter again!) the site was reasonably sheltered being on the south side of the pines so we were able to open some nets for the morning. It was very quiet however with no migrants caught. For new birds we caught one Blackcap (with a nice brood patch) and a Cetti’s Warbler. We also caught a few retraps including 1 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 1 Sedge Warbler and 1 Robin.

The birding highlight of the day was a Pied Flycatcher! It was showing really well around the NOA car park/along the track to the NWT VC. There are still 4 Fieldfare and a Wheatear in the dunes. There were some Hirundines feeding low over the Broadwater this morning including Swallow, House and Sand Martin. We were also treated to 3 Swift flying low and feeding over the pines briefly. The Cuckoo was back again doing its usual round along the pines/Broadwater often in hot pursuit by the local Meadow Pipit.

Pied Flycatcher – Seamus Griffin

We had our moth morning and unfortunately we only had 3 moths!! One Cinnabar, 1 Northern Drab and 1 Colephora albicosta. Bizzarely a Ramshorn Bagworm (L. lapidella) seemed to just fall out the sky and land on one of our members leg who was sitting outside the Obs. A Bagworm is a type of moth and this is the larval stage – they construct a case (or a bag..) to live before turning into an adult moth (it then actually does look like a moth!). This species feeds on lichen, pretty amazing little thing!

Bagworm!
