It was a warm morning (compared to previous days) and the wind was light so that I was able to open some nets. New birds caught were: 4 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Warbler, 4 Sedge Warbler, 1 Whitethroat. Retraps were 1 Cetti’s Warbler, 1 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Chiffchaff.

The birding today was rather slow with just a few highlights mainly from Thornam: 9 Ruff, 8 Whimbrel. At the Obs a Garden Warbler was heard in the morning, and a Great Egret flew past in the afternoon. A Lesser Whitethroat was singing nicely in front of the first NWT hide.

The moth trap was interesting if not abundant with 1 Pine Beauty, 8 Muslin, 1 Common Quaker, 1 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 1 Knot Grass and 1 Fern. I looked up the Fern as I wasn’t familiar with this species and found out that it usually flies from June onwards – this must be a very early record.
