Wren – Seamus Griffin

Very still and chilly first thing with some light fog, which soon burned off and turned into a beautiful sunny day. Good conditions for ringing, however, it was very quiet with only 13 birds captured, including 2 Goldcrest, 1 Wren, 4 Blue Tit, 1 Cetti’s Warbler and 5 Blackcap.

Generally quiet again for migrants with these lovely still and clear conditions! A Spotted Flycatcher was around the NOA staff car park in the morning. Two Cattle Egret were on one of the islands from the car park hide bizarrely sitting and balancing on a clump of reed! Late afternoon I had 4 noisy Crossbill fly out from the pines and go west. There was a couple of Greenshank on the Broadwater late afternoon.

In the moth traps today the numbers were again dominated by Lunar Underwing, followed by 38 Large Yellow Underwing. We also had 1 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Setacous Hebrew Character, 1 Feathered Ranunculus, 2 Large Wainscot, 4 Square Spot Rustic, 5 Beaded Chestnut, 2 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 1 White Point, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and 1 Treble Bar.

I found this Peacock butterfly which was trapped in one of the hides. After rescuing it, it sat for a while on my hand warming up before flying off!
