Robin – Seamus Griffin

It was generally quiet for migrants on the reserve today with a gentle south/south westerly dropping by the afternoon. It felt very autumnal today with the leaves changing colour and the trees full of berries. There was a mini arrival of Goldcrest with 17 ringed today, all were new birds apart from a retrap which we ringed as a juvenile in July this year. There was also a notable increase in Robin around the reserve.

Otherwise around the reserve, a Grey Wagtail flew over the grazing marsh in the afternoon. A Peregrine came in off the beach and then flew over the grazing marsh flushing all the ducks and waders! On the sea there was a Red-breasted Merganser, 3 Eider and 3 Red-throated Diver. A single Redstart and Blackcap were seen from Richardson hide in the late afternoon.

There was a lot of moths (in number) in the traps today, however the numbers were dominated by Lunar Underwing with 120!! There were also 2 Rusty Dot Pearl, 27 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 5 Square Spot Rustic, 2 Shore Wainscot, 1 Beaded Chestnut, 1 Large Wainscot and 1 White Point.

Shore Wainscot

This lovely Hummingbird Hawk Moth was also doing the rounds around the Buddleia on the few remaining flower heads in the afternoon.
