Cattle Egret

More biting easterlies today, but our dream of finding a Pallas’s Warbler didn’t work out. Despite the lack of brightly coloured eastern delights, there was still some good birding to be had. Bird highlights from today included 4 Red-breasted Merganser in Thornham channel, 22 Grey Plover, 30 Sanderling and 80 Dunlin on the beach and 3 Snipe, 2 Rock Pipit and 1 Cattle Egret along footpath to Thornham (which then flew west after deciding to not settle on the cows in the field). There was also 1 Cattle Egret sitting on the cows in the dunes.

At the Obs we saw 1 Great-spotted Woodpecker and 1 Redpoll, and on the eastern end of the beach were 14 Snow Bunting. Late on, a Short-eared Owl flew east over the sea along with (but not together with!) 2 Eider.

The weather finally looks good for getting some nets open tomorrow, so fingers crossed something good is hiding in the pines!

There were only 2 Large Wainscot in the moth traps today braving the chilly weather. So we have turned the moth traps off for the week but will be running them Tuesday night next week for the Wednesday moth group.
