Jack Snipe – Seamus Griffin

A hint of favourable ringing conditions had us up and on site at 06:30 setting nets on the most beautiful, still autumn morning.

This only lasted for a few hours, before the mist rolled in, the wind picked up and it got decidedly chilly. Still, we managed to catch exactly 50 birds, with Meadow Pipits and Reed Buntings making up the bulk of the catch, with the highlight being a somewhat late Willow Warbler. Totals as follows:

  • Chiffchaff – 2
  • Reed Bunting – 9 (1)
  • Meadow Pipit – 14
  • Cetti’s Warbler – 2 (2)
  • Blackcap – 2
  • Dunnock – 1
  • Song Thrush – 1
  • Willow Warbler – 1
  • Goldfinch – 1
  • Blue Tit – 2 (4)
  • Robin – 1 (1)
  • Wren – (2)
  • Goldcrest – (1)
  • Long-tailed Tit – (1)

Elsewhere there was very little signs of movement with birds largely as they were yesterday, only not including the Yellow-browed Warbler which seems to have finally moved on. There was some nice wader action from NWT hide 3, with Jack Snipe, Little Stint and Green Sandpiper all on show. The Lapland Buntings remain faithful to their patch of shingle/saltmarsh at the far eastern end of the beach, but the Snow Bunting, as with the Yellow-browed Warbler, seems to have moved on.

After a season of no Wasp Spider sightings whilst we were shutting nets we spotted one on the edge of a net ride! It had caught a snack for lunch.
