Snow Bunting – Shannon Clifford

It started off pretty breezy this morning, but the wind dropped off by late afternoon meaning we opened some nets for a few hours processing 10 birds including 5 new birds (1 Chiffchaff, 2 Blue Tit, 1 Goldfinch and 1 Robin) and 5 retraps (1 Robin and 4 Blue Tit).

First thing this morning we had 6 Crossbill flew west low over the pines. The Yellow-browed Warbler was the star of the day, being around the Obs on and off for most of the day. As I was updating our payment database it provided a welcome distraction hearing and seeing it right outside the Obs! It was showing well all along our reserve but mainly in front of the Broadwater Hide and along to Dell Hide, occasionally disappearing higher up into the pines.

Our long staying 2 Lapland Bunting and Snow Bunting (2 were reported today) were still showing well this morning on the beach, the Lapland Bunting still being best viewed by being on the eastern end of Holme beach and scoping onto the shingle bank towards the Thornham Channel end where they like to feed. The Little Stint was also still present on the beach.

Seawatching was also productive today with highlights of 44 Little Gull, 8 Eider, 239 Gannet, 10 Arctic Skua, 6 Red-breasted Merganser, 43 Brent Geese, 128 Wigeon, 129 Teal, 1 Pintail, 1 Lapwing, 12 Red-throated Diver, 1 Kittiwake, 159 Sandwich Tern, 1 Merlin and a Marsh Harrier.

Another quiet day for the moth traps with 25 Lunar Underwing, 2 Large Wainscot, 3 Feathered Ranunculus, 1 Square Spot Rustic, 1 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Narrow-winged Grey, 1 Small Mottled Willow, 1 Beaded Chestnut and 1 Shuttle Shaped Dart.
