Dark Chestnut – Shannon Clifford

We were out at first light in the drizzle, seeing what might have arrived late on yesterday or overnight. 2600 Pink-footed Goose flew noisly inland as we got out the van. A thorough search of the dunes and pines yielded very few of the migrants from yesterday, but there was a noticeable presence of Song Thrush with 52 in the area, and 23 Robin. Only single Redwing and Mistle Thrush were noted, and a couple of Brambling going over represented the only obvious movement of birds in the strong southerly wind. A few Goldcrest in the pines hinted at things to come over the next few weeks….

Pink-footed Geese on the move!

Later on in the day birds started to arrive, with at least two Yellow-browed Warblers around Redwell, two Pied Flycatchers around the pines and a Whinchat in the dunes. The confiding Snow Bunting continued on the beach east of the NWT access point and three Lapland Bunting were still at the easternmost end of the beach on the saltmarsh.

It was quiet in the moth traps for our regular Wednesday moth morning, with the highlight being a very fresh Dark Chestnut. We also had 2 Beaded Chestnut, 1 Beet Moth, 1 Black Rustic, 4 Eudonia angustea, 3 Feathered Ranunculus, 6 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 Large Wainscot, 31 Lunar Underwing, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 2 Mottled Willow and 4 Square–spot Rustic caught.

Early evening last night there were a few birds around the NWT entrance track including new arrivals of Wheatear, Brambling and Willow Warbler and one of our members shared these lovely photos.
