The unseasonal cold continues, even though the wind direction shifted from north to south-west and later in the day to the west.

My personal highlight today was watching the Spoonbill right in front of the NOA hide trying to go to sleep. The bird wanted to sit on its haunches but as it was sitting on a slope and the wind was blowing it off balance it struggled to get comfortable so in the end it stood up on one leg and put its head under the wing with the wind blowing into the crown feathers.

Other highlights were a Cuckoo calling at the reserve gate, 1 Grey Plover, 5 Sanderling and 2 Turnstone in breeding plumage on the beach. On Redwell marsh were 2 Common Sandpiper.

The moth trap was rather empty: 1 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 2 Muslin, 1 Treble Line, 1 Northern Drab. Today’s butterflies came out during the lunch time sunny spells: 8 Wall, 1 Admiral, 1 Painted Lady, 2 Small Heath and1 Small Copper.

1 Broad-bodied Chaser was flying around the pond landing on Yellow Flag Irises.
