Fieldfare – Shannon Clifford

Two Fieldfare were seen flying north west past the NWT VC, and then I later found them feeding together in the dunes! There was also 2 Wheatear still in the dunes. There was a steady trickle of Swallow with 47 recorded across the day. The sea was quiet but we had a nice Fulmar going west and also a steady movement of Common, Sandwich and Little Tern.

It was a good day for insects again and we recorded Holly Blue, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Small Heath, White sp., Brown Argus, Peacock, Brimstone, Wall Brown and more Painted Lady.

It was the best day of the year by far in the moth traps with 20 species recorded including 1 Pine Beauty, 8 Muslin, 1 Meadow Grass Moth, 4 Vetch Moth, 4 Northern Drab, 1 V-Pug, 11 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 1 Oak Tree Pug, 1 White Ermine. 2 Least Black Arches, 1 Chinese Character, 2 Ruby Tiger, 1 Knot Grass, 1 Fern, 1 Parsnip Moth, 1 Diamondback, 1 Willow Beauty, 1 Brindled Pug, 1 Lead-coloured Drab and a stunning first Poplar Hawk of the year.

The Green Longhorn were showing off today swarming around the pond/Sycamore around the Obs, and there was also a good number in the dunes. They can be really hard to spot but have quite a distinctive fluttery slight, almost fly like, but with huge antennae! They are pretty cool little moths so worth spending time spotting one around the Obs.
