14th April 2026

Emperor Moth

It was a calm although cold morning (I had to scrape ice from the car at 5am) so we decided to open the nets. We didn’t catch as much as yesterday but still had some nice birds. We ringed 3 Chiffchaff,1 Blackcap, 1 Sedge Warbler and caught 1 Coal Tit, 1 Chiffchaff and 1 Robin which were already ringed. The Robin was first ringed in 2023 and since then caught 12 times, so he is a regular. By 10:30 it got too windy, and we closed the nets. Yesterday we caught a Reed Warbler which was originally ringed in 2022 at Thornham by the North Norfolk Ringing group – what a great record.

Shannon discovered a Ring Ouzel next to the observatory on the grass slope which later flew into a tree in front of the obs and called several times before flying to the other side of Broadwater. It reappeared later in the afternoon back on East Bank. Later that day there were reports of two Ring Ouzels in the Dunes. There was also a female Redstart in the dunes.

A Brambling was also heard first thing in the pines at the entrance to the NOA reserve.

The moth trap was more productive than on the 13th with 5 species: 8 Hebrew Character, 2 Muslin, 1 Powdered Quaker, 1 Early Thorn and 1 Emperor.
