White Colon
There were two Spoonbill on the island from the car park today, with a Great White Egret standing next to them for size comparison! There has still been a Green Sandpiper about on the Broad Water. Yesterday, a Little Gull and two Garganey (a male and female) were on the Broad Water too. Lots of Stonechat around today with juveniles. A call in at Redwell to check on the Lapwing chick was positive – it’s still going strong and looks like a proper Lapwing now, and is nearly the same size as the parents!
We had 58 individuals of 33 species in the moth trap this morning! Surprising it wasn’t more with the hot temperatures. We recorded: 1 Small Elephant Hawk, 7 Pine Marble, 3 Barred Yellow, 1 Tawny Grey, 2 Cnephasia agg., 1 Pearl Grass Moth, 1 Black Cloak, 1 Pale Water Veneer, 3 Banded Hedge Grey, 1 Red-barred Tortrix, 1 Heart and Club, 1 Small China Mark, 1 Cyclamen Tortrix, 2 Heart and Dart, 3 Mottled Rustic, 1 Uncertain agg., 1 Lyme Grass, 1 Haworth’s Pug, 1 Dark Fruit Tree Tortrix, 4 Middle Barred Minor, 1 Buff Ermine, 1 White Colon, 1 Common Wainscot, 1 Common Footman, 1 Willow Beauty, 1 Garden Grass Veneer, 1 Rosy Footman, 1 Marsh Pearl, 1 Meadow Grass Moth, 1 Orange Pine Tortrix, 1 Pallid Grey and 1 Large Pale Masoner. The White Colon is a nationally scarce moth in Norfolk mostly found on the coast on dry, sandy habitats.
Rosy Footman
Barred Yellow
There were lots and lots of Meadow Brown butterflies around today, as well as goof numbers of Small Heath, Red Admiral and Small Copper. The usual Large Red Damselfly and a few Blue-tailed Damselfly were hanging about the pond.
