Elephant and Small Elephant Hawks John Stroud
A mild day with light showers increasing into the afternoon. It was a quiet day with nothing too unusual recorded, but many common species were singing and active, with at least one Cuckoo calling regularly, and at least 2 Lesser Whitethroats, a Stonechat, and a mixed group of Swifts and hirundines all of interest. Two Bullfinches were near the NWT payhut and at least 3 Cetti’s Warblers were vocal along the Hun and the Broadwater.
In the moth traps 5 Cinnabar, 4 Straw Dot, 1 Isotrias rectifascianus, 1 Dwarf Cream Wave, 6 Mottled Rustic, 3 Small Elephant Hawk, 2 Small Square-spot, 1 Teleopsis diffinis, 1 Small Waved Umber, 2 Bryotropha terrella, 3 White Ermine, 1 Elephant Hawk, 1 Celypha lacunana, 1 Burnished Brass, 1 Willow Beauty, 1 Shore Wainscot, 1 Treble Lines, 1 Common Swift, 1 Vine’s Rustic and 1 Light Brown Apple Moth were caught.
A Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly and Common Toad were also recorded.
