Emperor moth
There was more bird movement today than previous days. This morning, I found three Ring Ouzel in the dunes quite far west of the NWT Visitor Centre, which were very vocal flying noisily from bush to bush. There were five Crossbill in the Pines next to the NWT car park and were seen flying east but then not seen again and thought to have gone. A Willow Warbler was in the scrub by the NWT VC. A noisy Brambling was also calling in the Pines at the NOA staff park. There was more of a trickle in of Sand Martin and a few Swallow, all heading east. A male Wheatear was in the dunes west of the NWT Visitor Centre in the afternoon. A Wheatear and single Fieldfare were in a field towards Thornham harbour. A Ruff was in the pools towards Thornham end too.
There was only two individuals of two species in the moth traps with a male Emperor and a Hebrew Character. Oddly, we usually expect to catch female Emperor moths as these fly at night, whereas the males usually fly during the day in search of the females. There was also a Straw-barred pearl (Pyrausta despicata) spotted in the afternoon around the obs. In Norfolk, these are localised to the Brecks and the coast. There was a Peacock and Red Admiral enjoying the sun.
