Cattle Egret – Shannon Clifford

A cooler start to the day with a stronger northerly wind. The overcast conditions in the morning were good for ringing, however it was a much quieter day with only 12 birds processed. We caught 2 new Goldcrest which were carrying a lot of fat and weighed 6.6-6.7g which is the upper end of the weight range for Goldcrest.

No sign of the drake Garganey today and generally felt a bit quieter for birds compared to yesterday. The large flock of Goldfinches in the Pines were coming down to drink from our pond in the afternoon. The Tawny Owl was heard in the Pines.

The moth traps were quieter today with 16 individuals of 5 species including 2 Clouded Drab, 10 Hebrew Character, 2 Pine Beauty, 1 Mottled Grey and 1 Common Quaker. One Cinnabar moth was found in the Observatory building of all places! No butterflies again today despite the sunnier afternoon here.

Shannon Clifford,

Assistant Warden
