On the sea today 2 Fulmars, 3 Gannets, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 40 Sandwich and 8 Common Terns were counted. A Green Sandpiper was heard and 24 Whimbrel flew over calling. A Hobby was also reported. 10 Spoonbills, 3 Great White Egrets and 3 Grey Herons were seen. Two Stonechats and 2 Yellow Wagtails were also of interest.
In the moth traps a Bedstraw Hawk Moth, probably a recent release, was caught along with 2 Common Footmen, 6 Dingy Footmen, 8 Garden Tigers, 13 Scarce Footmen, 3 Rustics, a Bee Moth, 8 Drinkers, 8 Ruby Tigers, a Small Fan-footed Wave, Fen Wainscot, 2 Smoky Wainscots, a Webb’s Wainscot, Pale Prominent, Silver Y, Privet Hawk Moth, Oak Eggar, Rosy Minor, Yellow Tail, Brown Tail, a Rosy Footman, and a Nut-tree Tussock.
Butterflies were more plentiful today with 50 Meadow Browns, 20 Gatekeepers, 5 Small Heaths, 25 Wall Browns, 2 Speckled Woods, 6 Red Admirals, 6 Peacocks, a Small Copper, 2 Brown Argus, a Brimstone, 2 Essex and 2+ Small Skippers seen.
Southern Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer, Migrant Hawker and Common Darter were also noted.
