On the sea today 65 Common Scoter, 2 Fulmars, 6 Gannets, a Great Crested Grebe, a Little Tern, 90 Sandwich Terns, 23 Common Terns, a Razorbill and 4 Arctic Skuas were recorded. A total of 16 Black Terns were logged passing either offshore or along the Broadwater. A Garganey was on Christie’s pool and 2 Avocets, 6 Whimbrel, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, a Little Stint, 3 Common and 5 Green Sandpipers, a Greenshank, 2 Wood Sandpipers and 6 Snipe were noted. A Tawny Owl called from the pines mid afternoon and a Kingfisher and a Water Rail were also recorded. A total of 5 Pied Flycatchers were counted in the pine valley and a Redstart was along Broadwater Road, with a Wheatear and 3 Yellow Wagtails also of interest.
In the moth traps 12 Lesser Broad Bordered Yellow Underwings, 3 Drinkers, 3 Scarce Footmen, 8 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, a Shuttle-shaped Dart, 3 Smoky Wainscots, 9 Turnips, a Nutmeg, 7 Flounced Rustics, 2 Cloaked Minors, 6 Common Wainscots, 2 Six-striped Rustics, 19 Large Yellow Underwings, 2 Garden Tigers, a Garden Pebble, a Rosy Rustic, 4 Archer’s Darts, 6 White-line Darts, 2 Flame Shoulders, and Angle-barred Pug, 2 Straw Underwings, 9 Vine’s Rustics, a Yellow-tail, a Lime-speck Pug, Pebble Hook-tip, 5 White Points, 2 Smoky Wainscots, a Cabbage, a Pale Mottled Willow, and a Humming-bird Hawk Moth drinking rain water off the roof of the Observatory mid afternoon.
Butterflies, though wind-swept, included 2 Brown Argus, 4 Common Blues, 2 Small Coppers, 6 Gatekeepers and a Wall Brown.
