1913 Canary-shouldered Thorn (Wing span 38-42mm)

On the sea today 420 Common Scoters, a Fulmar, 10 Gannets, 5 Arctic Skuas, 114 Sandwich Terns and 19 Common Terns were counted. A Great White Egret and 3 Spoonbills were of interest and a Water Rail was heard. Waders included 42 Curlew, 18 Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Sandpiper, Greenshank and 23 Redshank. Two Cetti’s Warblers, a Grasshopper Warbler, 5 Stonechats, 2 Yellow Wagtails and a Grey Wagtail were also noted.

A good catch in the moth traps today included 2 Common Carpets, a Blood-vein, 5 Sharp-angled Peacocks, 26 Scarce Footmen, 8 Garden Tigers, 8 Drinkers, 2 Latticed Heaths, 2 Pine Hawks, 4 Yellow-tails, 2 Common Footmen, 4 Knot Grass, 3 Dwarf Cream Waves, 9 Large Yellow Underwings, 2 Turnips, 10 Uncertains, a Tree Lichen Beauty, Common White Wave, 2 Dusky Sallows, 30 Rustics, 5 Common Rustics, 7 Smoky Wainscots, 7 Dingy Footmen, 2 Early Thorns, a Cloaked Minor, 4 Single Dooted Waves, 3 Broad Bordered Yellow Underwings, 4 Ruby Tigers, an Archer’s Dart, 4 Kent Black Arches, 2 Ear sp, a Small Blood-vein, Straw Underwing, Scalloped Oak, 2 Least Carpets, a White Satin Moth, a Dagger agg, 4 Oak Eggars, Peppered Moth, 2 Rosy Footmen, a Poplar Hawk, Small Waved Umber, 3 Shuttle-shaped Darts, a Canary Shouldered Thorn (pictured), Common Swift, Mouse Moth, Bright-line Brown-eye, Pale Pinion, 4 Southern Wainscots, a Mother of Pearl, Nutmeg, Water Veneer, Small Dotted Buff, Least Yellow Underwing, Dark Arches, Privet Hawk Moth and a Red Twin-spot Carpet. A Humming-bird Hawk Moth was on the buddleia.
