Norfolk Ornithologists Association - NOA

Well, it was another very foggy day with little wind at the Obs. The fog lingered for the whole day and didn’t lift like yesterday. With the good calm conditions we had the nets open for most of the day, closing up around 2pm. It was generally very quiet with 34 birds being processed, 20 new and 14 retraps, the highlight being 7 Greenfinch!

  • Goldcrest – 1 (3)
  • Chiffchaff – 1
  • Robin – 1 (1)
  • Blackcap – 1
  • Blue Tit – 1 (7)
  • Greenfinch – 7
  • Song Thrush – 1
  • Blackbird – 7
  • Dunnock – (2)
  • Long-tailed Tit – (1)

Fog lingering over the marsh

Otherwise around the recording area there have been some nice birds today! The 2 Lapland Bunting and 2 Snow Bunting were at the east end of the beach. Recorded on the sea today, there were 4 Eider, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 5 Little Gull, 1 Great White Egret, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Pochard, 21 Teal, 14 Wigeon, 6 Red-throated Diver, 2 Guillemot and a Long-tailed Skua.  A Waxwing flew west in the morning. A group of 4 Whooper Swan flew east through the fog on the grazing marsh. A fifth single bird was seen later. A Firecrest was still around, being seen in Sea Buckthorn north of the NOA car park.

Work continued on our winter shed plan, with the new tool shed being built today (in between very quiet net rounds!). So, the fun work of moving all the tools and organising the new shed is next on the to do list.

Moths were quiet today with 4 species recorded including 6 Rusty Dot Pearl, 10 Large Wainscot, 1 Narrow-winged Grey and 1 Black Rustic.
