There was a breezy westerly today at the Obs, and it was another hot summers day. There were some terns moving on the sea with Sandwich Tern passing close in and a few Little Tern too. There was a Great Crested Grebe close in on the sea.

The Swallow chicks in the hide are getting big now, and hungry too! There was a family of Bearded Tit from Hide 3. At Gore Point I had a single Barn Swallow and House Martin both going west.

We got some details back from the French ringed Chiffchaff we caught last spring (sometimes it takes a very long time to get details back on foreign ringed birds).

Chiffchaff ringed in Chenal, France on 20/10/24 as a juvenile and recaught by us at HBO on 26/04/25

It was another really good day for our moth morning with lots of diversity and some special stuff too! I’ll add the list below. One of the highlights was a Sandhill Double-spot, which is a very scarce moth with only a few records most years. There was also a Hummingbird Hawk Moth around.
