Buff Tip
It was a wonderful morning at Holme – the temperature was pleasant, a gentle breeze was blowing from the south and the birds were singing as the sun was rising. The ringing wasn’t very abundant (possibly due to the sunny and slightly windy conditions) with only 1 Blackcap, 2 Reedwarbler ringed and 1 Lesser Whitethroat retrapped.
The Cuckoo was calling again today, and 3 Spoonbills were feeding on Broadwater. There must have been a hatching event of aquatic invertebrates – maybe mayflies or caddisflies as over 200 Black-headed gulls were feeding on Broadwater at 5am. a Whimbrel flew over the Obs at about 6am and a Common Tern and a Mediterranean Gull flew over Broadwater at lunch time. In the afternoon, there was a constant stream on Sandwich Tern going East along the coast – about 50 birds per minute.
The moth trap wasn’t as busy as yesterday but still had some nice moths in it: 1 Latticed Heath, 3 Mottled Rustic, 1 Yellow Belle, 1 Bee Moth, 1 Willow Beauty, 1 Marbled Minor, 1 Buff Tip and 1 Swift.
