Crane
There was quite a brisk south easterly in the morning meaning it wasn’t suitable for ringing unfortunately. It turned out to be a really hot day reaching over 20 degrees!
The highlight of the day was a Crane which appeared over the Broadwater/grazing marsh and then drifting slowly west before being picked up in Hunstanton! A Black Redstart was found in the dunes in the afternoon along with 6 Wheatear, no sign of the Ring Ouzel today. A first for me was watching a Kestrel hunting in the dunes, it dropped down into the vegetation and caught something, and I was surprised to see it was a Common Lizard!
It was a really good day for insects emerging in the warm conditions with Small Copper, Small Heath, Green-veined White, Peacock, Brimstone, Green Hairstreak, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Wall Brown, Large White and the first Brown Argus and Painted Lady of the year! We also a Hairy Dragonfly and Large Red Damselfly.
There were also a few day flying Cinnabar moths in the dunes. We had some more diversity in the moth traps too with 3 Northern Drab, 2 Flame Shoulder, 1 Pine Beauty, 7 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 1 Turnip, 1 Treble Lines and 1 Waved Umber.
