Shoveler – Seamus Griffin

It was an extremely windy day at the Obs, getting windier as the day went on! I ended up having to rescue the moth traps which had been blown off the tables.

Since the weather was so poor, first thing I birded along the Broadwater and then from the hides, hoping for an early Garganey! But, no such luck today. However, it was nice to see 14 Avocet sheltering from the wind from the car park hide. There was a good count of Shoveler with 58, the highest count in recent weeks. There were also 18 Tufted Duck and 6 Pochard. The Bittern was booming which is always lovely to hear. There was a lovely female Bullfinch along the track when I drove in.

Afterwards, Keith and I decided to take advantage of the windy conditions to get the shed cleared out, which took us a few hours in the end, but great to have a big clear out and reorganisation of the shed!

It was quiet in the moth traps with a nice Chestnut, 5 Hebrew Character, 2 Small Quaker, 1 Pine Beauty, 1 Clouded Drab and 1 Dotted Border.
