It was generally a quiet day ringing at the Observatory today with 36 birds captured, for new birds today we had 1 Goldcrest, 2 Cetti’s Warbler, 5 Reed Bunting, 8 Meadow Pipit, 1 Rock Pipit, 1 Redwing, 3 Blackbird, 5 Greenfinch and 2 Great Tit. For retraps 3 Robin, 1 Dunnock, 2 Blue Tit, 1 Cetti’s Warbler and 1 Chiffchaff.

On Wednesday 15th we had a good ringing session at the Observatory with 70 birds captured including 17 Long-tailed, 2 Wren, 8 Goldcrest, 3 Blue Tit, 16 Meadow Pipit, 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Stonechat, 4 Blackbird. for retraps 5 Blue Tit, 4 Wren, 3 Robin, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Dunnock, 1 Long-tailed Tit and 1 Chiffchaff. We also caught and colour ringed one Yellow-browed Warbler at Walsey Hills!

On Thursday 16th it was a very busy day ringing with 101 birds captured including 12 Goldcrest, 23 Long-tailed Tit, 27 Meadow Pipit, 4 Cetti’s Warbler, 1 Stonechat, 1 Blackcap, 4 Blue Tit, 2 Rock Pipit, 2 Dunnock, 1 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, 5 Blackbird and 1 Greenfinch. For retraps we had 2 Wren, 8 Blue Tit, 1 Great Tit, 1 Long-tailed Tit and 4 Robin.

Today we recorded a few finches on the move with 38 Siskin, 9 Redpoll, 35 Chaffinch and 16 Brambling. It’s been a fantastic day for Crossbill on the reserve with at least 64 individuals recorded, showing well in the pines and coming down to drink at our little ponds!

Very autumnal moth selection in the moth traps with 1 Feathered Ranunulus, 1 White Point, 4 Narrow-winged Grey, 5 Shore Wainscot, 16 Large Wainscot, 7 Large Yellow Underwing, 11 Lunar Underwing, 2 Clancy’s Rustic, 4 Beaded Chestnut and 1 Chestnut.
