An early start with the northeasterlies, it was a quiet start for ringing (and generally quiet throughout the day), however it didn’t take long to catch a beautiful Yellow-browed Warbler! The bird was fitted with colour rings (white over metal right leg, purple over green left leg) as part of the national project launched last autumn to try and find out more about the movements of these birds, so let us know if you spot it around the reserve.

Yellow-browed Warbler

Final ringing totals were 38 birds captured (30 new and 8 retraps). For new birds these included 22 Goldcrest, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler, 4 Blue Tit, 1 Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush and 1 Redwing. For retraps we had 2 Robin, 1 Goldcrest (this individual was ringed elsewhere so looking forward to seeing where it’s came from!), 1 Great Tit, 1 Blackcap, 2 Blue Tit and 1 Long-tailed Tit.

Early morning we counted 9250 Pink-footed Geese heading high west, before most of them came back onto the grazing marsh just after lunch. It was a good day for vis mig with 654 Chaffinch, 60 Brambling, 12 Greenfinch, 6 Siskin, 1 Redpoll, 8 Crossbill, 13 Fieldfare, 1 Mistle Thrush, 1 Swallow, 16 Blackbird and 13 Redwing.

Slightly less in the moth traps today with 2 Narrow-winged Grey, 19 Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Beaded Chestnut, 13 Lunar Underwing, 1 Turnip, 2 White Point, 2 Shore Wainscot, 4 Large Wainscot, 1 Willow Beauty, 2 Black Rustic, 1 Square Spot Rustic and 1 Red-green Carpet.
