Reed Bunting

It was a good morning for ringing with some early fog and still/very light westerlies first thing!

Foggy Sunrise at Holme

We caught 45 birds, 34 new and 11 retraps. We caught 6 Goldcrest, 4 Wren, 8 Blue Tit, 13 Reed Bunting, 4 Meadow Pipit, 2 Robin, 1 Cetti’s Warbler and 2 Dunnock. It was a lovely morning and good to catch so many Reed Bunting as they can be tricky to age but once you get your eye in they’re much more straightforward.

The wind quickly got up mid-morning and focussed the rest of the day birding around the Obs. There was one Whinchat off the coastal public footpath towards Thornham and 1 Woodlark went over. In amongst the mass of Meadow Pipit there were at least 2 Rock Pipit. There was a decent count of 6 Greenshank on the Broadwater along with a Kingfisher which went zipping past a few times whilst doing net rounds! Sixteen Bearded Tit also flew out the reedbed along the Broadwater and flew really high together. A Scaup flew past on a morning seawatch with some Brent Geese. The Whooper Swan was still showing well from NWT Hide 3, though periodically disappears up the channel and out of view. A Short Eared Owl was hunting in the dunes first thing this morning in the fog.

The Angle Shades was lovely and fresh!
