Drinker

It was a really lovely day at the Obs. A cloudy start with a brisk cool northerly again, turning sunny and hot in the afternoon. We had a really early start to be on site for 5am for ringing. We caught 27 birds across the morning including 17 new birds and 10 retraps. We caught 3 Wren, 4 Chiffchaff, 4 Sedge Warbler, 6 Reed Warbler (including a returning adult from June 2021!), 2 Blackcap, 1 Goldfinch, 1 Whitethroat, 2 Dunnock, 1 Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit and 1 Robin. This Robin was a retrap from earlier in the summer which we caught having recently fledged and it’s now well on its way through its post-juvenile moult with nearly a completly red breast!

The highlight of the day by far was a stunning Osprey that near enough flew over my head when returning back from a net round along Broadwater. It then flew north towards the beach and I lost sight of it. There was 5 Spoonbill, 1 Green Sandpiper, 10 Redshank and 1 Snipe from the car park hides.

At Gore Point there were at least 40-50 Little Tern. On the sea we recorded 1 Fulmar, 4 Gannet, 2 Common Tern, 55 Common Scoter and a steady stream of Sandwich Tern going past with fish! The tide was very high today with virtually no beach left! First thing I could hear Whimbrel calling away on the beach through the pines.

Moths again were on the quiet side due to the northerly wind with highlights being Oak Eggar and Drinker.
