Black-tailed Skimmer
The morning began with a slight chill, but temperatures quickly rose and it became rather hot. By afternoon, the weather shifted once more, with thick clouds obscuring the sun and some rain.
Bird highlights are: A Quail which was heard at Redwell at 8am, a Curlew and a Mediterranean Gull which flew over, a Shellduck crèche with 24 ducklings.

Last night’s moth trap: 1 Sallow Kitten, 17 Garden Grass Veneer, 1 Homoeosoma sinuella1 Evergestis limbate, 1 Heart and Club, Small Fan-footed Wave, 4 Coleophora sp., 2 Crambus perlella, 1 Ringed China-mark, 2 Privet Hawkmoth, 1 Riband Wave, 3 Common Footman, 2 Cnephasias sp., 7 Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Willow Beauty, 2 Isotrias rectifasciana (Banded Hedge Brown Moth), 3 Eudonia lacustrata, 6 Sand Dart, 1 Flame Wainscot, 6 Pine Marble, Haworth’s Pug, 1 Bactra lancealana, 3 Uncertain, 1 Common Pug, 1 Brown House Moth, 1 Common Swift, 1 Large Pale Masoner, 1 Single Dotted Wave, 3 Bryotropha terrella, 3 Turnip, 1 Middle Barred Minor, 1 Knot Grass, 1 Schoenobius gigantella, 1 Common Wainscot, 2 Red-barred Tortix, 1 Teleiopsis diffinis, 1 Mottled Rustic, 1 Crambus pascuella, 1 Light-brown Apple Moth, 1 Oxypteryx wilkella (Silver-barred Moss Moth), 1 Eudonia pallida, 1 Heart and Dart, 1 Monopis obviella, 1 Garden Mompha, 1 Dark Arches, 1 Diamond Back, 1 Blushed Knot-horn, 1 Archer’s Dart.
The butterflies and dragonflies loved the hot weather and there were too many flying around to count precisely. My count: 23 White sp., 3 Red Admiral, 9 Painted Lady, 2 Large White, 45 Meadow Brown, 2 Small White, 2 Peacock, 6 Small Heath, 1 Common Blue.
The added complication with the dragonflies was that I was only able to identify a Black-tailed Skimmer, they are just too quick to photograph.
