Wheatear

It was a productive morning birding in the recording area with over 60 species recorded. Whilst walking towards Thornham I spotted a goose flock in the field just beside the coastal public footpath, it was the White-fronted Goose flock! They were all happily feeding until they got spooked by a Marsh Harrier and in flight I managed to count c140 birds. Lovely stuff. Whilst I was looking at the geese I spotted a small bird in the middle of the field and as I got my scope on it, I was delighted to see it was a Wheatear! Our first for the spring and possibly the first spring Norfolk record this year? At Thornham pools there was a nice flock of 23 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Pintail having a snooze and two Ruff feeding along the pool edge. There were 2 Eider, 9 Common Scoter and 9 Red-breasted Merganser on the sea.

Twelve species in the moth traps today with some more new species including 4 Red Chestnut, 3 Common Quaker, 3 Early Reveller, 1 Small Quaker, 6 Hebrew Character, 1 Early Grey, 1 Mottled Grey, 3 Dotted Border, 1 Twin-spotted Quaker, 1 Lead-coloured Drab, 3 Clouded Drab and a stunning Oak Beauty! They have amazing feathered antennae.
