Green Brindled Crescent

A really foggy and chilly start which didn’t start to lift until mid-morning.

Foggy Broadwater at sunrise!

We had high hopes it may have dropped some birds in, but it was a slow start ringing this morning, with 54 birds (27 new and 25 retraps) ringed by midday, but 24 of these came on the last net round of the day with a mixed tit flock! For new birds we caught 3 Goldcrest, 1 Wren, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Blackcap, 1 Cetti’s Warbler, 6 Blue Tit, 2 Reed Bunting, 1 Robin and 2 Stonechat which were definitely the highlight of the day! For retraps we caught 4 Robin, 8 Blue Tit, 3 Great Tit, 1 Wren, 1 Dunnock, 1 Cetti’s Warbler and 7 Long-tailed Tit.

Juvenile male Stonechat

Otherwise around the reserve a Kingfisher was on the Broadwater this morning, and 9 Bearded Tits were being quite showy on East Bank. Two Tufted Duck, 5 Pintail and 19 Shoveler were on the Broadwater first thing. The sea was flat calm giving great views of 4 Red-throated Diver and 14 Great Crested Grebe sat on the sea. Five Crossbills went over in the afternoon. So generally quiet for migrants today but with the wind swinging to the northeast this week we’re hopeful for some birds!

In the moth traps today we had 3 Beaded Chestnut, 17 Lunar Underwing, 1 Feathered Ranunculus, 3 Large Wainscot, 4 Square Spot Rustic, 3 Narrow-winged Grey, 23 Large Yellow Underwing, 1 November Moth agg., 4 Black Rustic, 2 White Point, 2 Turnip, 2 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 1 Shore Wainscot, 1 Common Wainscot and 2 beautiful Green Brindled Crescent.
