Glossy Ibis

A day of pretty strong south easterlies which brought some migrants! A long day of birding through the Pines and dunes ended with us recording a minimum 17 Pied Flycatcher, 4 Redstart, 6 Whinchat, 4 Wheatear and 15 Chiffchaff. There were just 3 Pied Flycatcher in the firs when we arrived this morning, with a notable arrival late afternoon resulting 9 present by the end of the day (the other 8 being in the dunes).

Pied Flycatcher in the dunes

We were also patiently waiting and watching the movement of Glossy Ibis west along the coast from Eccles, then to Westbourne and Cley, hoping they would arrive at Holme eventually… Then, at 5 past 12, 29 arrived over the grazing marsh/dunes before drifting west out of sight, amazing to see such a number of them together! This flock smashes the previous high count of this species, and is only the third time more than a single bird has been seen at Holme, the previous two times being a flock of 14 in May 2023 and 4 recorded during a major eruption of this species in 1926!

29 Glossy Ibis!

A mixed tit flock around the obs right at the end of the day was fun to go through with at least 15 Blue Tit, 12 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Great Tit, 3 Coal Tit, 2 Goldcrest supplemented by 6 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 7 Pied Flycatcher and a very showy Redstart (which was landing on the rope around the Obs before being quickly chased off by an unhappy Robin….).

Redstart

Elsewhere, there was a Black Tern and 7 Arctic Skua on a seawatch this morning, 36 Black-tailed Godwit on the Broad Water and a nice early autumn count of 16 Little Grebe.

Quiet in the moth traps today with 1 Rosy Rustic, 1 Blackthorn Knot-horn, 5 Large Yellow Underwing, 3 Flounced Rustic, 1 Shuttle Shaped Dart, 2 Square Spot Rustic, 1 Rusty Dot Pearl, 1 Shore Wainscot, 1 Archer’s Dart, 1 White Point, 1 A. geniculea and a lovely Feathered Gothic!

There were Common Blue, Wall Brown, Small Copper and Red Admiral on the wing today.
