19th May 2025

No ringing today as there was more easterly in the wind than forecast and most of the nets would’ve been quite exposed. A good day to catch up with other things! In the afternoon I had 6 Whimbrel calling very noisily over the Broad Water which literally flew over the Obs toward the sea, lovely! I had a beautiful summer plumaged Grey Plover feeding in Thornham channel, along with 6 Ringed Plover that briefly dropped in, and a colour-marked headstarted Curlew (they have a yellow flag left above, orange under, and yellow on right above) from the Curlew Recovery Project who I’ve reported the details to. It’s always worth looking out for colour ringed birds whilst birding here and reporting them to the relevant schemes, I love getting the information back on where birds have been and it provides really valuable data to the people monitoring the birds.

Headstarted Curlew, Yellow Flag “TH”

Lower numbers in the moth traps today compared to yesterday with 25 individuals of 11 species including 7 Cinnabar, 1 Sharp Angled Peacock, 4 White Ermine, 1 Large Pale Masoner, 2 Flame Shoulder, 1 Heart and Dart, 1 Small Umber, 1 Small Elephant Hawk, 3 Northern Drab, 2 Treble Lines and 1 Mottled Rustic. Butterflies were more numerous in the sunshine today with Common Blue, Wall Brown, Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Copper and Speckled Wood. The Tamarisk outside the Obs continues to be a good spot to watch for butterflies and insect generally.

We had more dragonfly activity today finally with our first Broad-bodied chaser of the year on our pond! Along with Four-Spotted Chaser, Hairy Dragonfly, Large Red Damselfly and Azure Damselfly.
