Holme Bird Observatory
for as little as 14p per day.
5th April 2025

Snipe – Seamus Griffin
A sunny but chilly day with the brisk north easterly wind. A quiet day generally for migrants with one Swallow seen and no luck with searching for a Wheatear in the dunes, however two were reported towards Thornham Harbour, along with a Fieldfare. Lots of Chiffchaff around. Three Sandwich Tern were seen today, with two high over the obs in the afternoon. The four Cattle Egret were with the cows off the track most of the day.
A very, very quiet couple of moth traps with only one lonely Hebrew Character. Things improved moth wise in the afternoon with the first Hummingbird Hawk-moth of the year active around the Observatory (which is much more sheltered in this wind direction!). By the time I grabbed the camera it was gone. The Smooth Newts are enjoying the weather and I counted 15 in the pond in the afternoon.

Assistant Warden
